(LIN) - Often heralded as one of the greatest (if not THE greatest) movie musicals of all time, MGM's "Singin' in the Rain" celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2012.

The movie debuted on March 27, 1952 in New York and a few weeks later in Los Angeles before opening for the public on April 11.

Starring Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds, Jean Hagen, and Cyd Charisse, the musical tells the tale of Hollywood as it transitioned from the silent era to the era of talkies.

Only two of the songs were written especially for the film: "Moses Supposes" and "Make 'Em Laugh." The majority were pulled from MGM musicals of the 1920s and 1930s.

But out of all of the movie's memorable tunes and scenes, perhaps none has had the longevity as Kelly's rendition of the title song.

"Singin' in the Rain" was first featured in the "Hollywood Revue of 1929," but Kelly, with a lot of rain, an umbrella, a killer smile, and an amazing dance routine, made it all his own.

Kelly would have turned 100 this year on Aug. 23.

Here is a look at some of our favorite "Singin' in the Rain"-inspired moments throughout the years, some of which are sure to put a smile on your face and maybe even inspire you do to your own singing and dancing in the rain.
