ASHWAUBENON - Before Taylor Schmidt and her Algoma teammates take on Cuba City on Thursday in a Division 4 girls basketball state tournament game at the Resch Center, Schmidt was named the top senior point guard in the state as part of the Wisconsin Sports Network senior girls basketball awards.
Schmidt, who has led Algoma to its second state trip in three seasons, averages 12.5 point per game and four assists per game for the Wolves. Schmidt was also named the Packerland Conference’s player of the year for the second time in three seasons.
Schmidt, who will play next season at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, has enjoyed a great season with Algoma (24-2) after tearing her ACL last postseason.
Finalists for the award were Schmidt, Riley Budde of South Milwaukee, Samantha Murray of Waunakee, Chelsea Nooker of Bay Port, and Jenny Tuttle of Mukwonago.
Nicole Bauman of New Berlin Eisenhower received the award last season.
